The Mary Jane shoe is named after a comic character

The Mary Jane is named after a cartoon. The strapped flat takes its name from Mary Jane, Buster Brown's sweetheart in Richard Outcault's comic strip from 1902. The Brown Shoe Company licensed the characters in 1904 and put the name on children's shoes, and it stuck for a century. A shoe named after a comic strip.
