Dali wanted real mayonnaise on a Schiaparelli dress

Salvador Dali wanted to finish a dress with mayonnaise. For Elsa Schiaparelli's 1937 Lobster Dress, he drew a giant lobster across white silk, then suggested they smear it with real mayonnaise to finish it off. She refused. The two made Surrealism wearable, the lobster dress, the shoe-shaped hat, and Schiaparelli gave fashion 'shocking pink' the same year. Couture with a sense of humour.
