The duffle coat is named after a Belgian town

The duffle coat is named after a town in Belgium. Duffel gave its name to the thick wool the coat is cut from. The Royal Navy issued it, with toggles you could fasten in gloves and a hood that fit over a cap. Field Marshal Montgomery wore his so often it earned a nickname: the Monty coat. Gloverall began selling the surplus from 1950, and the rest of us got one too.
