The Dr. Martens 1460 is named after the day it was born. A German doctor, Klaus Maertens, invented the air-cushioned sole in 1945 while recovering from a foot injury. Britain's Griggs licensed the idea, and the eight-eyelet cherry-red boot launched on April Fools' Day, 1960.
One, four, sixty. That is the 1460. A medical comfort insole that ended up a punk uniform.
