Ray-Ban is named after the thing it blocks

Sunglasses named after the thing they block. Bausch & Lomb built an anti-glare green lens for US Army pilots, a lens that 'banned' the sun's rays. The name wrote itself, and the Ray-Ban patent dates to 1937. Made for the cockpit, adopted by generals and film stars alike. Function led, cool came after.
